Super Rugby has gone through some major changes both in terms of how the competition looks and where games can be viewed on TV. With the first-ever Super Rugby Trans Tasman competition now underway, here's everything you need to know.
Super Rugby 2021 TV Preview
The original Super Rugby format is no longer thanks to the 2020 coronavirus outbreak. South African teams have headed to the European Pro 14 and the Jaguares are stuck in a covid bubble, leaving teams from Australia and New Zealand to get creative with Super Rugby AU and Aotearoa.
All 10 Super Rugby AU and Aotearoa sides are now taking part in the first-ever Super Rugby Trans Tasman tournament between May and June. Each side from AU will play every side from NZ once across 5 rounds, with the two most successful sides advancing to the Grand Final.
This tournament promises to throw up some really entertaining rugby with every game essentially a Trans Tasman derby! Also, the Bledisloe Cup and Rugby Championship competitions start straight after the tournament, allowing players to put their names in the hat for international selection.
Where to Watch or Stream Super Rugby in Australia
The broadcast rights to Super Rugby in Australia during the 2021 season belong to Nine and Stan Sport. One game from every round of Super Rugby AU will be available via Nine, with all other games on Stan Sport. Every game from the Super Rugby Aotearoa broadcast live and exclusive on Stan Sport. Four games from Super Rugby Trans Tasman will air exclusively on Stan Sport, with one game per round on 9Gem.
Stan's new venture into International and Domestic Rugby is also backed up by a stellar commentary team that will appease both new and seasoned fans of the game. Roz Kelly and Nick McArdle will share presenting duties, with Sean Maloney and Andrew Swain calling the games. They will be assisted every week by former players including Tim Horan, Morgan Turinui, Drew Mitchell and All-Black legend Andrew Mehrtens.
