What I mean is – We are living together and have been for the past 3 years.  We live in Delaware. Our insurance agent said that if we combine our policy, our insurance will be cheaper.  The only issue I have with this is… well, my GF isn't the best driver.

If she gets in an accident or gets a ticket and we are on the same policy, how will this affect my costs???

Our Answer

If you and your girlfriend are living together, then it may be in your best interest to bundle auto insurance policies together. In many cases, you can save hundreds of dollars per year by bundling your car insurance policies together.

You can save even more money by bundling multiple insurance policies together. Do you and your girlfriend have homeowners' insurance or renters' insurance? if so, then you may be able to save even more by bundling all your insurance policies together under one company.

Now, let's get to the next part of your question: do you really want to bundle your car insurance policies together if your girlfriend is a bad driver?

This comes down to your personal preference and your aversion to risk.

  • If your girlfriend is a bad driver and she gets into an accident, then your insurance premiums will rise
  • If your girlfriend has already been involved in an accident, then her insurance premiums may already be higher, in which case your premiums may rise when bundling policies together
  • If your girlfriend gets a speeding ticket or another type of citation, then your insurance rates could rise as well

With all of these situations, the rules apply to your policy in total: since you have two auto insurance policies bundled into one convenient payment, your payment will rise if either one of you gets into an accident.

The seriousness of your relationship comes into effect here. Are you planning to share your finances with your girlfriend for the rest of your life? If so, then it may be in your best interest to bundle your policies together as soon as possible. Even if your girlfriend gets into an accident, you two are sharing finances regardless, so it doesn't matter which one of you is paying more for car insurance.

Alternatively, if you would rather limit your own personal liability and keep your finances separate, then you may wish to keep your car insurance policies separate. If you avoid an accident, then you will continue paying the same auto insurance premiums. If your girlfriend gets into an accident, and your policies aren't bundled together, then only she will pay higher insurance premiums – not you.

Can unmarried partners combine car insurance policies?

Some couples avoid bundling car insurance policies together because they believe you have to be married to take advantage of bundling discounts.

This isn't true! In fact, roommates can list themselves under a single auto insurance policy if they want to. Most insurance policies already require you to list all drivers in your household anyway.

Your insurance company doesn't care about your relationship status. If you legitimately live at the same address as another person – regardless of your relationship status – then you should be able to combine car insurance policies together without issue.

Can I remove someone from the policy after we break up?

What happens if you break up with your girlfriend? In this case, you can easily remove another driver from your policy – assuming you now live at separate addresses.

If you have broken up with your girlfriend and no longer live at the same address, then you should have no trouble totally separating your policies from one another. Alternatively, if you live at the same address after a breakup, then you may be required to continue listing your driver on your own car insurance policy, although you do not technically have to continue bundling policies together.

Can I bundle car insurance policies if I live at a different address than my girlfriend?

You mentioned that you and your girlfriend have been living at the same address for three years. As long as you share the same address, you should have no trouble bundling car insurance policies together (again, you can bundle car insurance policies together even with a nin0oartner roommate as long as you're living at the same address).

However, if you and your girlfriend do not live at the same address, then it's unlikely that you can bundle car insurance policies together. It may be possible to add your girlfriend as a secondary driver on your vehicle (say, if she drives your vehicle very frequently). In most cases, however, you cannot bundle two policies into one if you are living at separate addresses.

Good luck bundling car insurance policies together – and consider asking your girlfriend to enroll in a defensive driving course!

Answer 1

You cannot combine your insurance policy with your girlfriend.

From ehow – If a boyfriend and girlfriend who live in separate households attempt to get a shared car insurance policy, it is unlikely to be approved. Insurers will usually only consider adding multiple people to a policy if they share an address. So if the two individuals live in the same household, they may be able to get the same insurance policy with the required coverage for their vehicles.

If you are married, on the other hand, that is a different story –
